Celebrate National Nutrition Month In March With Crawfish

March is National Nutrition Month!  This month celebrates making good food choices and promoting healthy eating. March is also a time you start to see more boiled crawfish served at restaurants and parties.  Who doesn't look for ward to Louisiana crawfish season?  Now, you are wondered how crawfish fits into a month that focuses on nutrition?  Crawfish is good for you and makes a great seafood option.

Crawfish Is Good For You!

Louisiana crawfish is low in fat, saturated fat and trans-fat. Crawfish are also a great source of high quality protein. They are also a good source of vitamin B12, niacin, iron, copper and selenium.  I always quote one of my favorite dietitians, Molly Kimball who says, "Ounce for ounce, boiled crawfish tails have nearly half the calories of roasted skinless chicken breasts.

Is Boiled Crawfish Healthy

Crawfish are healthy but what about the fixings with the crawfish boil? Add more vegetables to your next crawfish boil to boost up the nutrition.  Most people include corn, potatoes and onion but think about tossing in mushrooms, squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli or your favorite vegetables.  Sometimes, after a crawfish boil, people complain about feeling bloated but this is usually a temporary condition due to spicy or salty crawfish..  So, if the crawfish and vegetables are spicy or too salty, you will retain fluid.  Try to cook your crawfish in less salt which will help.  Remember, crawfish themselves are low in calorie, low in fat and high in protein.  Just how we want to eat! I have so many easy healthy crawfish recipes.
